Bio

Camille Ross is an American Photographer. B.1964 in San Francisco, California she was raised between two polarizing universe's, radical Berkeley in the 70's and Rural Mississippi. Her childhood was one of observer of the bleak contrast of African American, and Native American cultural segregation amongst the backdrop of a pervasive racist Anglo culture. Camille's grandparents were biracial and Camille is part Cherokee, the sense of being "other" is in part what has given her such a strong voice in her medium, where she is equally respected by both her colleagues and her viewership, which consists of a multigenerational span of audiences. It is this contrast that informed her vision and her work from an early age and really on through adulthood where she is also a civil liberties activist. She hopes that her documentary work can continue to offer insights into the marginalized lives she often photographs. While her latest work incorporates her passion for research, critical theory, she is also well known as a New Media Artist who explores the roles of social media and globalization in many of her projects which can all be seen in recent publications. Very recently Camille started to explore AI so some of the images and projects one may find some of this new work, an incredibly exciting new door for artists to explore, and that's what we are always doing right? In my own work, I take snippets of visual information anywhere I can find inspiration, and if I can't find it out there I'll make it myself. I've been interviewed a lot lately and I think the most important thing I can say about being an artist, is the compulsion we have to make art, because that's what we do, we make something of value out of nothing, or out of everything, and yes, all at once. She is a graduate of Goddard College and Cranbrook Academy of Art, MFA 1991. She is the recipient of several prestigious grants and awards including the New Mexico Council on Photography, The Tucson Council on the Arts, The International Women's Foundation of Marfa, Texas where she was offered a one year fellowship and culminated into one of her many solo exhibitions including Building 98 in Marfa, Texas, The New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
